Hackettstown Public School Pictured is the school located on Washington Street as it appeared at the turn of the century.
The three story brick building located on Washington Street, between Plane and Center Streets was completed in 1875 at a cost of $39,000. Within a few years after its completion, all students from the 'Academy' and High Street schools had transferred to this new school and when it opened on September 1, 1879, it boasted a total student body of 623 children. The first Superintendent of the new high school was E. R. Warrener. He served for a term of seven years. His successor was E. H. Richardson.
The Washington Street school has been enlarged three times to accommodate its growing student population; in 1915, 1922 and again in 1949. It is now the Hackettstown Middle School.
